By Christopher Miller, PhD

Welcome to the Spring 2025 semester at Arihanta Institute! We are thrilled to embark on another exciting semester with our students and supporters, where we will offer an array of transformative educational opportunities and courses that are not only timely but will deepen your understanding of Jain studies, compassion, and nonviolence.

This semester, we feature three advanced graduate-level seminars in our Engaged Jain Studies MA program track through our collaboration with Claremont School of Theology. These seminars are designed to engage students in critical inquiry and offer insights into Jain Studies, Yoga Studies, Food Studies, and Critical Animal Studies—fields of academic inquiry with great relevance in today’s world. They include:

Foundations of Jain Yoga Studies with Christopher Jain Miller, PhD
Food Politics in South Asia & Beyond with Jonathan Dickstein, PhD
Sanskrit 2 with Cogen Bohanec, MA, PhD

Furthermore, we are proud to expand our reach with seven online courses, offering flexibility and depth for learners at all stages of their academic journey. These courses are not only innovative but necessary to the evolving conversations on ethics, culture, and sustainability. Key offerings include three courses from our Vegan Studies Initiative:

Animal Sanctuary: Solutions in Nonviolence with Jonina Turzi, VP and Co-Founder of Lancaster Farm Sanctuary

Veganism & Pop Culture

6 Hours of Self-Study + 4 Live Q&A Sessions on Zoom

The Dairy Industry: Realities and Reimaginings

6 Hours of Self-Study + 4 Live Q&A Sessions on Zoom

The Center for the Study of Jain Yoga continues to provide critical educational experiences with two essential courses:

Yogabindu and Yogadṛṣṭisamuccaya: The Yogas of Haribhadrasūri with Christopher Jain Miller, PhD

University Sanskrit 2 Live with Cogen Bohanec, MA, PhD

Finally, through our Compassion Studies Initiative, we offer three courses that are not just academically rigorous, but deeply transformative for both students and society:

Jain Teachings & Practices of Compassion with Jeffery D. Long, PhD

Forgiveness as Compassion with Venu Mehta, PhD

Spiritual Approaches to Cultivating Compassion with Frank Rogers, PhD

These offerings are more than just courses—they are integral to the intellectual and moral development of individuals committed to creating a more compassionate and nonviolent world. At Arihanta Institute, we are not just adding to academic knowledge; we are helping shape the future of scholarship that is grounded in compassion, sustainability, and a profound understanding of the interconnectedness of all life.

We invite you to engage with us in this vital work and look forward to a semester that promises to be both intellectually enriching and socially transformative.

Thank you and Jai Jinendra!
