A Symposium on Jain Studies: Research Dialogues Across Disciplines
The Università di Torino will hold a symposium on Jain Studies titled "In Thought, Word, and Action: Jain Practices and Epistemologies of Non-Violence in India and across the Indian Diaspora." This event will take place on March 27, 2025 at 2:30 pm CET in Sala Pellegrino, Biblioteca Peterson, via Giulia di Barolo 3/a, Torino.

Arihanta Institute’s Professor Christopher Jain Miller will be speaking alongside other invited colleagues in Jain Studies. Professor Miller will delve into the complexities of Jain anti-vegan discourse through his talk, "Arguing Against Ahimsa: Cognitive Dissonance Strategies in Jain Anti-Vegan Discourse." His research explores the cognitive dissonance strategies employed within Jain communities that challenge the principle of ahimsa (non-violence) in the context of anti-vegan discourses.

Joining Professor Miller are several esteemed scholars, each bringing unique perspectives on Jain practices and philosophies:

  • Leonardo Stockler from Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo will present “Embodying Ahimsa: Knowledge Change and Conduct Change in the Paesi Kahāṇayam”

  • Kamini Vrajlal Gogri from SOAS, London, will discuss the “Evolution of Jain Philosophy: Reform, Reinterpretation, and Relevance in a Changing World”

  • Yifan Zhang from the University of Ghent will offer insights into “Jain Perspectives on Non-Violence in their Southeast Asian Diasporas (Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore)”

  • Erika Caranti from the University of Turin will present “Vācika Ahiṃsā: Navigating the Path from Thought to Action”

  • Sara Roncaglia from the University of Turin will share her research in "Ahimsa in Words: Preliminary Notes on the Ethnographic Research ‘Distinctive Values and Non-Violent Practices of Jainism and "Jainness" in Southern Europe’"

This symposium, part of the Bhagvan Adinath Jain Study Programme at the University of Turin, promises to be a significant event looking at the rich traditions of Jainism and its contemporary relevance. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with leading experts and gain a deeper understanding of how Jain principles of non-violence are interpreted and practiced across different cultures and regions.
